“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who can judge this thy so great a people?”
1 Kings 3:9
King Solomon placed so much value on understanding, hence he placed a demand for it! Understanding is key to a life of exaltation. Without understanding, we can never be outstanding in life. Job says, “For thou, hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt them.”
Job 17:4
What is understanding?
Understanding is our ability to comprehend things. It is what helps us to make sound judgment, wise decisions, and take profitable steps. Understanding is also our ability to discern spiritual truth and to apply it to our disposition and conduct.
God remains the Author and Giver of understanding. God gives us the spirit of understanding as a gift; as there is no price tag on it. “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:6
“And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.”
1 Kings 4:29
We sure need understanding from God, as human understanding is limited. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; lean not unto thine own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5
How to gain understanding?
1. Through faith
“Through faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
Hebrews 11:3
2. Through God’s Spirit
“Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”
1 Corinthians 2:12 ESV
3. Through the Word
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Psalm 119:130
When we gain understanding, the results are tremendous. For instance, we will seek God sincerely, obey God completely, take the right path and enjoy life. David says, “… give me understanding that I may live.”
There is nothing that produces sensible living like understanding.
And there is nothing that procures foolish conduct or behaviour like
lack of understanding. Fools die for lack of sense or understanding.
“The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.”
Proverbs 21:16
I decree and declare that you shall not wander out of the way of understanding in Jesus’ mighty name.
Yours sincerely,
