“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
Hebrew 6:4-6
This passage under review is directed to believers. Are you a believer? If yes, then you need to critically answer the following questions:
Have you been enlightened spiritually or have you tasted and consciously experienced the heavenly gift?
Have you encountered the Holy Spirit and consciously experienced the good Word of God? If yes, then you need to be vigilant so that you will not fall away from God. Falling away or turning from God is worse than never having known Him. (Read 2 Peter 2:20-22)
We have escaped from the filthy things of this world, we must not go back to them or be controlled by them. We are not dogs that return to lick up their vomit, neither are we pigs that roll into the mud after being washed! The truth is that if we deliberately sin and consistently wander away from the Lord, we end up crucifying Him afresh and putting Him in an open shame. Do you know that we can deny Jesus Christ and turn our back to God? If we deny God, He will also deny us. The Bible says, “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:”
2 Timothy 2:12
Let’s consider 3 bulwarks against falling away from the Lord:
1. Know the repercussions or horror of falling away!
“For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.”
Hebrew 10:26-27
2. Be vigilant about the antics and schemes of the devil!
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
1 Peter 5:8
3. Depend on the ability of God to keep you from falling away!
“Now unto him, that can keep you from falling, and present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Jude 1:24
I decree and declare that you will not backslide or fall away from God in Jesus’ mighty name!
Yours sincerely,
