“Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiled thou it: he went up to my couch.”
Genesis 49:3-4
Reuben’s passion for sex was like a flood that he couldn’t control. He climbed into his father’s bed and slept with one of his concubines, thereby bringing shame to his father. His unstableness or lack of self-control brought him a curse. I love the way how Amplified Version renders this passage under review:
“But unstable and reckless and boiling over like water [in sinful lust], you shall not excel or have the preeminence [of the firstborn], Because you went up to your father’s bed [with Bilhah]; You defiled it—he went up to my couch.”
Are there people like Reuben today in our world? Yes! Plenty! You are a Reuben if you lack self-control or self-discipline. You are a Reuben if you are passionately looking for nothing but the chance to commit sexual immorality. You are a Reuben if your appetite for sexual sin is never satisfied. But know that you will bring yourself under God’s curse by living like Reuben!
Let’s consider 3 ways to checkmate and control your passion:

  1. Fear of God
“And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:”
    Genesis 42:18
Joseph had a personal testimony of living or operating in the fear of God. I can deduce that it was the fear of God that made him run away from the seduction of Potiphar’s wife. These days that demonic seduction is on the rampage, we need to live a life of the fear of God always to preserve our lives and destiny.
  2. Spirit of self-control
“But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these.”
    Galatians 5:22‭-‬23 GNT
The work of self-control in man is done by the Spirit of God. As children of God, the Spirit dwelling in us produces self-control in us. Do you know that it is by the Spirit that you can mortify the deeds of the body? Apostle Paul says, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
    Romans 8:13
  3. Self-discipline
“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I should be a castaway.”
    1 Corinthians 9:27
Self-discipline is about you accepting personal responsibility to discipline your flesh to bring it under control. It takes discipline to bring your body under control and make it do what you want. Your flesh must not be your boss! You can make your flesh your slave!
I decree and declare that your flesh will not bring you shame or reproach in Jesus’ mighty name!
    Yours sincerely,
