“And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art.”
Genesis 41:39
As I studied Joseph, I’m eternally overwhelmed and enthralled by how he engaged different shades of wisdom to navigate his way through life. No doubt, the spirit of wisdom was at work in him from one stage of his life to another. In Joseph, I certainly agree that wisdom is better than strength. In him, I learnt that in every stage one would require a new type or shade of wisdom to navigate through life.
What is wisdom?
Wisdom is the correct application of knowledge. It is knowing what to do and doing it well. Foolishness on the other hand, is incorrect application of knowledge or abuse of knowledge. Wisdom is also about knowing how to respond to issues or challenges of life to your own advantage. Now let’s learn some few lessons from Joseph how he engaged different shades of wisdom to navigate his way through “land mines” planted by satanic agents who were out to truncate his destiny:
- Wisdom to maintain calmness
“He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.”
Proverbs 16:20
Joseph maintained the wisdom of calmness in the pit! And he was able to find good. By maintaining calmness, he did not provoke the anger of his brothers who were out to eliminate him. Imagine if he had abused or insulted his brothers, he would have been killed. The Bible says wisdom is a defence. It is foolishness to confront or fight someone who is fully armed. The person could hurt you! It is foolishness to confront a fully armed policeman or armed robber! - Wisdom to run away.
“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.”
1 Corinthians 6:18
In Portiphars’ house, Joseph
displayed a rare wisdom of running away from temptation. He did not rely upon his strength or power of resistance to still hang around the scene of temptation. It is wise to run away from danger! It is wise to run away from a person or a place which seeks to hurt or derail your destiny. Don’t keep company with
criminals, prostitutes or fools! Hanging around clubs or brothels is foolishness! - Wisdom to seek the good of others!
“He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour…”
Proverbs 11:27
Seeking the good of others is wisdom! Seeking the ills or downfall of others is foolishness! Do you know that Joseph was able to navigate his way out of prison by diligently seeking the good of other prisoners? Imagine if he had not interpreted the dreams of the chief butler and the baker. Let me leave the answer to your imagination! It is a validation of a rare shade of wisdom to go out of your way to seek the good or wellbeing of others. As a prisoner, Joseph was never low in spirit, frustrated or distressed, rather he was ebullient, going from one prisoner to another asking about their wellbeing; and how he could be a solution. Mark it, solution providers are wise people!
I pray that you will know how to engage different shades of wisdom to your advantage this year in Jesus mighty name!
Yours sincerely,
Joe Jesimiel Ogbe
