“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.”
James 4:8
We are called to live a life of constant and consistent purification of our hearts. Why? Because Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence because out of it flow the springs of life.” The heart must be “kept,” or else it will run away from us. If we do not “keep” the heart properly oriented, it will lead us in the wrong direction.
Did you know the Bible mentions the heart over one thousand times?
The heart comes in many varieties:
Deceitful Heart, Double Heart, Wicked Heart, Perverse Heart, Heavy Heart,
Fretting Heart, Troubled Heart, Broken Heart, etc.
We are called to accept responsibility for the pure state of our hearts. Getting serious, really serious about cleansing our inner life is what God wants from us. Why do we need to purify our hearts? Because that’s where the Spirit of God lives or dwells. Do you know that an unregenerate heart can be deceitful, wicked, disingenuous and unreliable? The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Jeremiah 17:9
We must be deliberate in guarding and cleansing our hearts.
Until we understand our role in purifying our inner being, we may become carefree or lackadaisical. Purifying the heart is about walking with God and pleasing Him with a perfect heart. Purifying the heart is about working assiduously to be flawless, unequalled and unparalleled in character and conduct. Can a man truly be perfect, without fault? Yes, but only on the account of God’s intervention and influence. Perfection is the quality of God. He alone is worthy to be described as perfect or second to none. As His dear children, we are to resemble Him by living a life of purity.
Let’s consider 3 ways to walk in purity and perfection:
1. The way of decision
Like King David, decide to walk in perfection!
“I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.”
Psalms 101:2
2. The way of Request
As David prayed for his son, pray that God may make you pure and perfect.
“And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart…”
1 Chronicle 29:19
3. The way of Trust
Trust God to make you perfect like Jesus Christ and spirits of just men.
“And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”
Hebrew 5:9
“… to God the Judge of all, and the spirits of just men made perfect.”
Hebrew 12:23
