Lessons from my QuietTime:
Understanding
“And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.”
Genesis 24:63
In these days of the proliferation of the eastern religion of yoga or deep meditation, is it healthy for a Christian to engage in meditation? Yes! Is it biblical to meditate? Yes! In the passage under review, we see Isaac going out to meditate in the field.
What is Meditation? Meditation is about the purposeful concentration of your mind on a particular subject. Meditation is the repetitious going over of a matter in your mind. Meditation is an act of calling to mind or deep thinking on a subject of interest. Do you know that you are a product of your thoughts, negative or positive? The Bible says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”
Proverbs 23:7
Experts have come up to say that there are thousands of thoughts that flood our minds every day. Some of these thoughts are majorly negative, while others are positive. They said that human beings produce up to 50,000 thoughts a day and 70% to 80% of those thoughts are negative. This translates into 40,000 negative thoughts a day that needs managing and filtering! No wonder, many of us fall prey to negative, irrational, fear-based thoughts! These days of wars, terrorism or insurgency, many people are given in to fears. But we must understand that fear is not pure! Fear is not lovely. Fear is not good! Apostle Paul enjoined us in Philippians 4:8 to always think or meditate on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, good and things that are virtuous or praiseworthy. It is not just the content of your mouth that matters to God, but also your meditation. The Bible says, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14
Let’s consider 3 things we should dwell upon constantly:
- Work of God
“I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
Psalms 77:12 - Word of God
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have success.”
Joshua 1:8
“O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all day.”
Psalms 119:97 - The Lord Himself
“When I remember thee upon my bed and meditate on thee in the night watches.”
Psalms 63:6
“My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.”
Psalms 104:34
I pray that your meditation may be acceptable to God in Jesus’ mighty name.
Yours sincerely,
Joe Jesimiel Ogbe
