“But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast took; for she is a man’s wife.”
Genesis 20:3
In the above passage, God visited Abimelech in a dream. It is important to note that God speaks to us in dreams.
In Genesis 31:24, God visited Laban in a dream at night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.” In Matthew 2:12, we also see God visiting the wise men in a dream and warning them not to return to Herod. Many of us are perturbed about our dreams, particularly when we are unable to decipher or unravel the meaning. Some people’s dreams are elusive, as their dreams disappear when they wake up from sleep, while others will dream of food and drink but wake up weary, hungry and thirsty as ever. (Isaiah 29:7-8)
What is a dream?
A dream is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. The dream is also about one’s cherished aspiration and ambition. Do you know that if you keep thinking about something, you may likely dream about it? Some dreams come to us through much effort or activities. The Bible says, “For a dream cometh through the multitude of business…” Ecclesiastes 5:3
Also, the more we worry about things, the more likely we dream, especially bad ones.
Let’s consider 3 purposes of God’s orchestrated dreams:
1. Revelation about God’s Plans
In Genesis 28:11-22, we are introduced to Jacob’s dream about God’s will and plans. In the dream, God promised to give him and his family the land on which he was sleeping. And that his descendants were going to spread all over the earth in all directions and his family would be a blessing to all people. God also promised him that He was going to watch over him and fulfil all He had promised him. You too can pray and trust God to visit you in dreams to reveal His plans to you.
2. Confidence boosting Tool
God had mandated Gideon to attack the Midianite camp, promising him that He was going to let him defeat the Midianites. But Gideon was still afraid, so God caused a man from the enemy camp to dream a dream which was spoken to the hearing of Gideon. The purpose of this dream was to boost their confidence in Gideon. As soon as Gideon heard about the dream and what it meant, he bowed down to praise God. Then he went back to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Let’s go! The Lord is going to let us defeat the Midianite army.” Judges 7:13-15
May your confidence in the pursuit of your assignment be boosted via God-ordained dreams!
3. Revelation about the future
In Genesis 37:5-10, we are introduced to Joseph’s dreams. His dreams were about his future leadership role. His brothers asked him, “Do you think you are going to be king and rule over us?” Even though they hated him for his dreams, God brought to pass the fulfilment of Joseph’s dream of leadership. God can cause you to dream about your future role in your family and generation.
I decree and declare that you will fulfil your cherished dreams and aspirations in Jesus’ mighty name!
